Matthias Church

The Matthias church was the first church of the Castle hill. It was built in the 50s and 60s of the 13th century. It is officially named the Church of Our Lady but is known as Matthias Church after the much-loved 15th-century Renaissance king who contributed the towers and who was twice married here. In many respects, the 700 year history of the church serves as a symbol (or perhaps a reminder for Hungarians) of the city's rich, yet often tragic history.
